I appreciate the fact that you are firm in your atheism (as an agnostic, I take no offense, obviously :p) but do you ever think that in asserting your belief as forcefully and frequently as you do, oftentimes violently shredding Christianity in the process, that you're acting no better than the annoying evangelical Christians out there who throw God in everyone's face and condemn alternative beliefs? Isn’t the point in life to be more tolerant?

I was having this conversation with my girlfriend the other day. Of course we have two different growing up experiences. She lives in England where from my understanding most people don’t give a shit about what religion you are and are thus a bit more tolerant (barring nutjobs, the uber-religious, and cults like Scientology).

Atheists are the number two most hated group in the United States (the Tea Party being the current most hated). On the internet I’m more vocal than I am in real life, but I’ve lived in the South for almost 12 years. In my experience, most religious people I’ve encountered tend to be hateful or want to convert you. But usually I hold my tongue. I grind my teeth and don’t bring it up until they cross a line. In fact, I usually never bring up my atheism unless directly asked in real life. I save my wrath for the special few who piss me off (which these people are generally those that hide behind religion to defend their hate mongering). On a whole, I can get along with religious people.

On my blog, which people are free to follow or not, I post what I think or reblog others thoughts that coincide with my own. I follow and know I am followed by a Christian or two. I never discuss religion with them, but I love their blog for it’s non-religious parts (and reblog and like often) and they do they same (except for the non-atheist parts). I show them respect and never reblog anything from them and tear into it. They haven’t offended me and I don’t want to directly offend them. On some days my blog may be over-saturated with atheism posts, but generally those are days I’ve had a bad experience with a religious person or I’ve read a story that makes me grind my teeth. Still, I try not to go off the deep end and try to keep my blog balanced with the reasons that people follow me: geeky and funny shit. =p

And I don’t think I shred into Christianity as a whole, I’m however more critical of those that are philosophically xenophobic, homophobic, anti-science, and anti-separation of church and state. Overall, I think I’m tolerant of the average religious person as long as they are tolerant of me.
